Spam filtering
Spam filtering using Baynesian filters and lists of known spam filters is reasonably effective, but it was still missing some 20-30% of our spam. When we rolled out our new email server, the only spam filter that we enabled is a server-side technique called "greylisting." The greylisting software we use requests retransmission of any message from the originating mail server. Any standard mail server will resubmit the message, but the mass-mailing software used by spammers will disregard that part of the relevant protocol. This has dramatically reduced the amount of spam reaching our customers, greatly increased the accuracy of our filter, and increased the reliability and speed of our server by leaps and bounds. .
If you have any questions about the new spam filter, please contact support@speedex.net or 812-471-7500 for
support Monday – Friday 8am to 5pm.
Connectivity
Issues
Vyyo
Cablemodem System:
Our
wireless cablemodem system is dependant upon a good line-of-sight
signal from our tower to your location, and back, to work
properly. While overall this is a very reliable system,
there are a a few things that can knock out your Internet
service, or create problems. Please use the following
steps to try to help diagnose, and hopefully solve your
problem:
Look
at the front of your silver Vyyo cablemodem... there are
4 lights on the front- check to make sure the lights are
providing the correct indications:
- Power
Light Lit (should be lit when the cablemodem
has power) - If this light is not lit, check to make
sure the calblemodem transformer is plugged into an
AC outlet and is receiving power.
- Status
light Lit (should be lit when a good wireless
connection exists) - If the staus light is not lit,
first try power-cycling the transverter power inserter
and the cablemodem- basically if you follow the coaxial
cable connected to the cablemodem it should go to a
power intserter which has a transformer that is plugged
into AC power (usually located in the same room as the
cablemodem)- unplug the power inserter transformer from
AC power for about 5 minutes, and also unplug the cablemodem
transformer from AC power. Then, after about 5 minutes,
first plug in the power inserter, then the cablemodem.
If that fixes the problem, the status light should come
on in a minute or two. If you have to do this often,
ensure that the cablemodem and power inserter are both
plugged into a surge suppressor, or... preferably an
uninterruptable power supply (UPS).
- RF
Light Lit / Blinking (should be lit or blinking
when the coaxial cable is connected to the transverter,
note that it can occasionally appear to go out alltogether
if you are transferring a lot of data over your cablemodem,
but in that case it's okay) - If this is not lit or
blinking, check to make sure the power inserter for
the transverter is powered up (basically if you follow
the coaxial cable connected to the cablemodem it should
go to a power intserter which has a transformer that
is plugged into AC power (usually located in the same
room as the cablemodem).
- LAN/USB
Light Lit / Blinking (should be lit or blinking
when you have a connection to your computer or router)
- If this light is not lit or blinking check to ensure
that the device that is plugged into the ehternet /
usb port is powered up- also make sure the cable is
plugged in securely on both ends.
If
these lights are all behaving properly, but you have no
Internet connectivity whatsover (ie. you can't check e-mail
or get to any web pages), you have a problem with your
computer or router. It's possible that your IP address
is not set correctly. If you have a router, consult your
router manual as to how to connect to your router and
check yoru IP address settings. If you have Windows 98/ME/XP,
to see what IP address you are using, click Start, Run,
and type command in the run dialog box and click
okay. A DOS box should come up. Type
ipconfig -all and hit enter. Make sure your IP
address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS Servers match the
settings we provided you when we installed your cablemodem.
If you do not have the sheet we gave you and are unsure,
call us at 812-471-7500 to make sure you have the proper
information. If you do not have the proper information,

Router Setup
While OVC allows you to use a router to provide high speed access to multiple computers in your home or business with a network, due to the variety and complexity of some routers, we do not provide technical support for setting up a router or a network beyond our cablemodem. However, if you choose to do so, you can consult the following guides for information regarding setting up your router. You will need to provide a static IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and primary and seconday DNS addresses for the router. This information was supplied to you when you subscribed to OVC's service. If you need this information again, call us at 812-471-7500.

Recommendations
While
OVC does not support your computer, or problems beyond
our equipment (ie. cablemodem), we do have some recommendations
regarding how your can prevent viruses or spyware from
infecting your computer and wreaking havoc. Viruses and
spyware can cause many different problems from simply
slowing down your system and allowing marketing companies
to spy on your computer habits, to causing innumerable
popups or web site redirects, changing your start page,
or erasing all of the data on your system or even damaging
hardware. To ensure that these things do not happen to
you, we recommend that you install (and keep updated)
a good anti-virus program, and occasionally run an anti-spyware
program as well. It is very important to keep your system
up to date and patched... if you run Windows 98/ME/XP/2k
you can use Windows
Update to update your computer - make sure you at
least install all critical updates..
| A
few of the FREE Windows prorgams that we recommend
to our users are: |
|
Zone
Alarm Free is a good software firewall. If you do
not have a router, it is important that you use some
form of firewall. Windows XP w/ Service Pack 2 has
a built-in firewall, so if you're running that one
that is fine instead. |
|
Sygate
is another software firewall like Zone Alarm. Make
sure you use only one firewall (ZA Free, Sygate Personal,
WinXP SP2 FW, or another) |
|
AVG
Free is a great anti-virus program and is completely
free for home use! Make sure you install only one
anti-virus program. |
|
Avast
is another great anti-virus program that is also completely
free for home use. Make sure you install only one
anti-virus program. |
|
This Avast removal tool will scan your system and remove a number of viruses and worms. Note that this is just a cleaner however, NOT a long-term antivirus solution. Download Avast Home or AVG Free above for that. |
|
Ad
Aware is a great anti-spyware program that you can
run occasionally to help keep your computer free of
spyware. |
|
Mozilla Firefox is a fast, easy to use browser with effective pop-up blocking created by the authors of Netscape. |
|
Opera is the fastest, msot secure web browser available for Microsoft Windows. Featuring a rendering engine written from scratch by talented Norweigians, its use strongly recommended by Ohio Valley Wireless. It also includes a high-quality email client, integrated into the browser. (Ports of Opera are also available for Macintosh, Linux, and Windows CE.) |
Note
that while we recommend the above programs,
we DO NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT for them.
